A little win for Veronika and a MASSIVE win for ch A little win for Veronika and a MASSIVE win for chickens in New Zealand.

Many, many years ago (a lifetime, in fact) when I worked as a Media Officer for the Royal New Zealand Society for the Protection of Animals, I launched a campaign to Ban the Battery Cage. Did you know battery hens spend their LIVES in a space the size of an A4 page?

I was told it would take about ten years for the changes to come into place.

28 years later!!! This morning a friend in NZ messaged me with the wonderful news that the ban has come to pass. The Universe is funny though (as ever)... Today I am officiating a funeral for a man who worked as a chicken sexer. I.e. deciding if a chick is a rooster or layer.

A friend of mine once said to me, about my passion for things, "Veronika, you have so much drive. You'd even be passionate about chickens!" She couldn't stop laughing when I told her that I'd launched the Ban the Battery Cage (and gave her encyclopedic knowledge about the life of a battery hen).

I can do the same about the pain fish feel when caught! Don't worry, pescatarian friends, I'll save that for another day. 😉

This afternoon in the chapel at Carlisle Crematori This afternoon in the chapel at Carlisle Crematorium we remembered the life of a woman who moved far away from her rural home in Northern Ireland, spending many years living in Jamaica, marrying her husband and raising children in this beautiful place with British-colonial architecture, rainforests, lush mountains and reef-lined beaches. Her life was forever changed by the magic of Jamaica with its breathtaking nature and vibrant culture. Life there brought her sunshine, tropical fruits, BBQs, and Christmas on the beach. As part of a large ex-pat community, she forged many friendships. Eventually they settled in a Cumbrian village and created a wonderful life here.

This morning in the chapel at Carlisle Crematorium This morning in the chapel at Carlisle Crematorium, we remembered the life of an incredible and amazing woman. Amongst her many adventures in life she walked the Great Wall of China, climbed the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, the Pindos Traverse, trekked Mount Blanc, Everest Base Camp, Ben Lomond in New Zealand, and walked across Iceland. In the desert, she rode a camel, camped and walked up dried river beds. She sailed on the mail ship to the fjords in Scandinavia, and travelled by train across Canada and Australia.

I feel like a sloth in comparison!

Rest in peace, beautiful.
