Creating a Beautiful Life

My life’s work is infused with a deep and profound love of the sacred: nature, words, ritual, home and family. In fact, my favourite word is home.

Flowers of every type enchant me, and I adore hot sunshine, tempestuous thunderstorms, my hands in the earth, the haunting strains of cello, stars, and moonlight. My great pleasures also include being snugged up on the sofa by the woodstove reading a book, being mesmerised by birdsong at dawn, and time with my family. My favourite scent is eucalyptus (and I use it like a white witch in my housecleaning!) because it reminds me of my childhood in Australia, and how good the bush smells after the rain.

Celebrancy and Cooking: what do they have in common?

As an Aussie-born child, I had the delicious delight of being raised by German parents. Christmas was an absolute joy and wonder year after year. It was never a commercialised event based on how much money could be spent or buying presents…

A Courageous Life: a funeral celebrant's thoughts

How often do we use the word ‘courage’ to denote someone who acts bravely in the face of adversity? It’s certainly how most people understand the word and its tone of battle-like determination. Yet, when I reflect on what it means to live…

With the rise of celebrant-led wedding ceremonies in England, and registrars now offering ‘bespoke’ ceremonies, it’s important for couples to understand the difference between when a celebrant creates a bespoke ceremony and when a registrar…

One of the things I encourage our celebrants-in-tr One of the things I encourage our celebrants-in-training to do is, if possible, grow a celebrant garden. This dedicated space is for flowers and herbs which can be used ritually to enhance the meaning and beauty in ceremonies. It also offers a space for quiet contemplation.

A longish day with two funerals and then a visit t A longish day with two funerals and then a visit to a family to learn about their loved one (and an evening ahead of ceremony writing) but from start to end it has been filled with the loveliest people: kind, friendly and appreciative mourners, wonderful funeral director and pall bearers, the excellent team at the crematorium, and the warm staff when I stopped for lunch at the cemetery cafe.

And wall to wall 🌞 I love this weather!

At my second funeral on this lovely Summer's day, At my second funeral on this lovely Summer's day, we included a Lavender and Rose Blessing. It was for a truly special mother of seven, grandmother of 17, great grandmother of 15, and great, great grandmother of one. Such an inspiring, nurturing woman who, although her long life was punctuated with grief stories many times over, brought so much joy and delight to all those around her.

It was an honour to be the celebrant for her (and her family).

I can tell you, these went down a right treat!

Sorry to the crem staff that you missed out :-(
