Creating a Beautiful Life

My life’s work is infused with a deep and profound love of the sacred: nature, words, ritual, home and family. In fact, my favourite word is home.

Flowers of every type enchant me, and I adore hot sunshine, tempestuous thunderstorms, my hands in the earth, the haunting strains of cello, stars, and moonlight. My great pleasures also include being snugged up on the sofa by the woodstove reading a book, being mesmerised by birdsong at dawn, and time with my family. My favourite scent is eucalyptus (and I use it like a white witch in my housecleaning!) because it reminds me of my childhood in Australia, and how good the bush smells after the rain.

Mama Moussaka

This meal always gets my family excited. If it’s on the menu, Eliza can be heard to swoon the words: “Good day, food-wise.” My reply is: “It’s always a good day, food-wise!” 4 aubergines (or eggplants, to my Aussie friends) …

A life well lived

I have many ‘favourite’ moments of the day, but somewhere near the top is the feeling I have when I climb into bed each night. There’s a weariness to my bones, but also a deep sense of appreciation for a life well-lived and enjoyed. I…

I was voted by school teachers as the one most lik I was voted by school teachers as the one most likely to fail in life.

So here I am failing, day after day, and loving my life.

In my own way and style, I have authored a few dozen books (including some international translations); created ceremonies across all rites of passage for 28 years; and have been training amazing people to be Heart-led Celebrants for the past six years.

I have been self employed for 28 years. It takes a completely different mindset to be your own boss!

A few years ago, while working full time, I studied for a Masters in Creative Writing (also full time) despite no previous degree. #deependacademia

I've travelled to several countries, and moved countries six times (twice when my kids were babies/toddlers). Eek!

First and foremost, I have a beautiful family.

I may have been voted most likely to fail in life but that doesn't mean I didn't excel in some subjects, such as: speech and drama, English, catering, orienteering and...Swedish.

And top marks for wagging (playing truant)!

I hope this post encourages you to be true to yourself and to create the life YOU want rather than what others tell you or expect you to live.

As a funeral celebrant, working on a daily basis with the newly bereaved, I know that life is short. Way too short for regrets.

So, go do that wild swimming, learn cello, backpack across India, take up bellydancing, volunteer, ask that cutie out on a date, write your memoir, eat that cake! Or sit back and smell the jasmine. Whatever makes your heart sing, and makes the world better through your kindness and creativity, do it in abundance.
